We are methodically working our way through this Spangle home that needs some sprucing up. The clients finished raising their five children in this home and have transitioned into housing and caring for an elderly mother as well as providing a safe place to land for a newly divorced daughter and her children. Function and well as finishes need to be updated to better meet these needs.
Contractors are working through each of the bathroom updates that I have posted about briefly, so our next space to tackle is the Owner's bedroom. The proposed update of the ensuite bath motivated 'Mr. Spangle' to declare that the bedroom was in need of work too. This is where we come in. Discussions were had of how the couple use the space, what they need and what they want. 'Mrs. Spangle' had visited a friend's home that used a rich, brick red and marveled at how snug the space made her feel. She asked "Do you think we can get away with it?"
Of course you can. Let's talk about how. First, it is a large space, with plenty of light and a beautiful view. Next, we can update the flooring in a speckled, deep plush carpet that will give the eye a visual rest as well as contributing to the 'snug' factor. The clients own a lovely Mission style bedroom set that definitely fits within the scope of the proposed updates throughout the home. This takes care of all the 'bones' of the space. Now we need to dress it with bedding, upholstery and drapery and accesorize with lighting and artwork to make this space sing.
With this color in mind, I began the search for upholstery fabric, bedding or drapery that I could draw on for the remaining finishes. I found it in fabric to recover a bench sitting at the end of the bed.
The red is the correct tone, the blue gives me another color to work with and the beige provides a neutral rest for the eye in this space. The client saved an upholstered bench with rounded arms from the estate of a recently passed loved one, knowing that she had always wanted such a bench in her bedroom but because it was upholstered in the wrong color for her existing space, it always sat covered with stuff. Well no longer will that be the case! It is time for that bench to be made beautiful again. From here I could source bedding, drapery and artwork confidently.
As I worked, I found a number of different items that will work in the space but these are the items that I have proposed as the best fit for the look we are trying to achieve.
On Wednesday we have an appointment to discuss this space. To gain feedback from both Mr. & Mrs. Spangle and make changes where necessary. The client will then choose how to proceced. We can handle the ordering, procurring and install of the items or they can choose to work on this at their own pace. These days there are supply chain issues and delivery delays that can cause quite a headache as we work to complete updated spaces for clients. Having a plan that is flexible and discussions about different options can help all along the way. If you are interested in a redesign, we'd love to work with you. Get in touch today!
